Ticket #18972, comment 2
initial v1 1 I managed to solve this. VirtualBox and VirtualBox Extension Pack can be installed into Ubuntu Linux either through VirtualBox downloads or with apt-get from Ubuntu's repository. When a Virtual Machine is created under one install method then reinstalls via the other method, it can cause multiple problems. The ones I've encountered or that I've seen reported: 1 I managed to solve this. 2 3 For Ubuntu hosts, there are multiple ways to install VirtualBox: VirtualBox's official version or Ubuntu's official repository. Mixing these can cause multiple problems. The ones I've encountered or that I've seen reported: 4 2 5 1) Seamless mode not working 3 6 2) Video randomly resizing 4 7 3) Attempts to install/update Guest Additions fails (e.g. with "phantom device" errors 5 8 6 To prevent, install _both_ VirtualBox _and_ VirtualBox Extension Pack via downloads or via Ubuntu's official repository: 9 To prevent, install _both_ VirtualBox _and_ VirtualBox Extension Pack from one source and stick with that one source: 10 11 1) Official VirtualBox versions: This has the advantage you'll always have the latest version. Find both VirtualBox _and_ VirtualBox Extension Pack under Downloads on virtualbox.org. 12 13 2) Ubuntu's official repository. Your version will generally be older but will be part of Ubuntu's official testing, bug-fixes, etc. Install it via apt: 7 14 sudo apt-get install -y virtualbox-5.2 virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-soure \ 8 15 virtualbox-guest-utils virtualbox-dkms virtualbox-qt
