#18083 new defect

Ordering of groups (inside groups) gets lost upon GUI restart

Description

This issue did appear with 5.2.18 (AFAIK) and is still in the current one. I have not been able to pinpoint, what exactly is missing and in which file.

This is happening: VBox GUI shows groups + vm's, but in a messed up order. Next i manually sort them, as they should show up, close the app, reopen, and the order is back to the messed up one, which did not happen half a year ago.

I am going to attach 2 screenshots and the main config file.

errata - addenum:

over the last week, i got so annoyed by the continuously changing sequence of machine groups appearing in the GUI, that i tried several things to remedy the situation. All of them failed.

First, i tried to manually update the .Virtualbox.xml file. But that turned out to be too complicaed for my taste. And since i was not able to verify, that this file would be making a difference, i interrupted this attempt.

Next, i used another system partition to install different versions of virtualbox into it. One after the other, i tried using 5.2.8, 5.2.14 and 5.2.18, always in the desperate attempt to at least ONCE get a healthily sorted file into my hands.

But to no avail. My statement of the behavior not appearing half a year ago was just incorrect. i assume, i did just not yet have groups within groups at that time. (Surprisingly, as i did have 3 times as many vm's compared to now.)

What i would like to add, is this: While in the GUI, it is possible to sort the groups (even using the sort menu command), and also manually. And while the sort order for the VM's within groups (or within groups, that are within groups) persists application restart, the groups sort order does not.
