Graphic crash - referenced memory could not be written

Description

Hi. Both Ubuntu 16.06 & Mint guests on a Windows 10 host keep crashing.

When running Visual Studio Code or Atom the screen freezes. When I tried on Ubuntu to switch workspace (before even installing either) the whole VM died with the error shown in the attached screenshot.

I've attached logs too. Please suggest anything you can think of that I could try. I've set my host graphics card to always be Nvidia, as people say the Intel onboard one is error-prone.

O.M.G - please see my stackoverflow question here: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/278282/how-do-i-fix-my-display-after-atom-broke-it-completely?noredirect=1#comment484727_278282

Your v18 graphics adapter is totally broken. I rolled back to v16 after wasting two days of my life and everything works.

WHY OH WHY DON'T YOU TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THIS OR MAKE A PATCH??

So much suffering...

You mix different things. First, if you VM process crashes then there is also a problem on the host. Either in VirtualBox or in the host graphics driver. Second, the 5.0.18 Guest Additions work for many guests and for many users. Recent Linux distributions require a new kernel graphics driver which was shipped the first time with VBox 5.0.18. The download page clearly mentions that there might be problems with certain guests and points to the 5.0.16 Guest Additions in case the 5.0.18 Guest Additions don't work.

Right now we've seen most problems with Ubuntu 14.04 when using the lts-utopic/lts-vivid/lts-wily packages and we are working on a fix.

Replying to rje:

Your ranting does not help at all. Don't think that keeping all these different Linux distributions working is easy. If you want to help then you could start by providing a Windows application dump for your crashing VM guest. And the information if the VM process still crashes when you disable 3D is also interesting.
