Latest Version of VB Guest additions

Reported by: MikeMc Owned by:

Description

Just installed the latest version of VB on a windows 7 desktop with 16 GB of RAM. Almost everything is working but when I installed the guest additions, I cannot get the desktop server and the USB 2.0 devices to enable. When I try in the VB Manager it tells me that it is an invalid setting. I tried creating several different VM's (XP, W2008R2, SBS2011) and all tell me the same thing that the display server and the USB 2.0 are invalid settings.

Everything else in the guest additions seems to be working (Integrated moues, networking and everything else I have tried). On the desktop server I even tried changing the port that it was to use.

The one that is a real clue is why USB 2.0 tells me that it is an invalid setting and that I must install the latest version of the Guest additions to use that function. USB 1.0 work fine.

I have VB running on my laptop at the same version and every VN works fine including the USB 2.0 and Desktop Server.

Thanks,

Mike McClanahan

I could use a little help here.

Mike, there is probably a misunderstanding. There are two types of packages:

  1. The VirtualBox Guest Additions. This is additional software which can be installed in the guest. This software allows the guest to use additional functions provided by the VMM for a better experience like you described (mouse integration, resize the VM window will resize the guest screen and so on). The Guest Additions have nothing to do with USB2/USB3 support.
  2. The VirtualBox Extension Pack. This is additional software under a dedicated license (PUEL) which is installed on the host. The code in the Extension Pack complements the existing functionality of VirtualBox and adds support for USB2/USB3, for RDP (for accessing a VM remotely), for passing through webcams and for disk encryption. If you need either USB2/USB3 or RDP then you need to install the Extension Pack. This has to be downloaded separately from this web page and installed (VM selector / Preferences / Extension Packs). The version of the Extension Pack must match the version of VirtualBox. If you don't have the ExtPack installed and try to enable USB2/3 or RDP, the GUI will warn you that this wouldn't work.

Please accept my apologies for being old and stupid.

I should have checked to see if I had installed the extension pack on the computer I set up and totally forgot to check.

And on Windows 7 you were correct. I checked the power options in the control panel and got a shock. The setting were blank. In all the years I have been working with Windows I have never found the settings boxes to come up blank. When I selected shutdown the all the virtual machines I checked started working again.

Thanks again for all the help and one hell of a good product.
