Application hangs when using multiple CPUs

Description
Host is a Dell Latitude E5530 with i5 CPU. I have setup an Arch Linux guest which works fine on a single CPU. If I choose multiple CPUs the guest will run for a while but after an indeterminate amount of time (usually within a minute) the VirtualBox application hangs on the host and has to be forced closed.

Oh, and you assigned 4 virtual CPUs to your guest. But your host has only 2 real cores (with 2 hyperthreads per each core). Can you reproduce the hang if you assign only 2 virtual CPUs to your guest?

No response, closing. Please reopen if still relevant with VBox 4.3.2.

Forced closed, does that mean you have to kill the process or is it possible to power-off the VM from the machine menu?
