I got a similar problem. Don't have any logs right now but when I try to boot an Ubuntu 64 bit guest OS on a Windows 8 64 bit host OS I just see the VirtualBox boot screen for some seconds and then the screens goes black and it seems like nothing happens after. I tried three different Ubuntu images. Had no time to try any 32 bit version yet but the 64 bit ones all run on my Windows 7 OS - just Windows 8 seems to have this problem. Ofc using the latest stable VirtualBox release (4.2.10).
