#9789 obsolete Problem reading files on shared drive after upgrading 4.0.12.to 4.1.4 Martin Kirk
Description

I have recently upgraded from 4.0.12. to 4.1.4. I am running a Linux guest (RHEL5) on a Windows 7 host.

I am using the VM to test development of a web-based PHP application, and all my files are edited and maintained in the Windows 7 file system, which is mounted as a shared drive on the host system. I am running Apache 2.0 on the gust system to process and display the web pages.

Since the change, the formatting of my web pages has gone awry, apparently because some of the files are not being read correctly. As an example, Apache is reporting that it is having problems reading my CSS file. Looking at the error in the Apache error console, and clicking the filename, it comes up with a lot of unreadable characters, much as you would expect if you open a binary file in a text editor.

If I use a text editor on the Linux guest system to open the CSS file, it looks fine. Also, it appears to be having no problems running the PHP scripts, which are also plain text files, and edited and maintained with the same tools.

If I reload 4.0.12, the old (correct) behaviour returns, which would seem to rule out problems in the shared files themselves.

It is as if something has changed in the handling of shared drives which is affecting the content of files under some circumstances. Something to do with character set handling suggests itself, but that would just be an uniformed guest.

#9796 obsolete linux usb kernel crashes when vbox is resumed karlp
Description

If I start up a VM, and use USB, it all works just fine. if I close the vbox session, and choose "Save the machine state", when I resume it later (like the next day) the usb subsystem is broken. Any attempt to access a usb device (even lsusb) hangs completely.

/var/log/messages contains the following entries:

The khubd backtrace repeates itself every few minutes for about 20 minutes, then ceases. My only workaround so far is to reboot the VM

Guest OS is debian 6.0.3, Linux dragnet 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Mon Oct 3 04:15:24 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

I can't remember when I started seeing this, but it was definitely in 4.1.2, and is also in 4.1.4

#9802 obsolete Upgranding Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 on guest failing Gary Evans
Description

Using a clone of a fully-functioning VM running Ubuntu 11.04 as the guest I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 by accepting the option to upgrade offered by Ubuntu following the login. The upgrade process appeared to work up to a point in the process where it hung and the display for the guest showed a very rapidly flashing series of dialog boxes, from which it was possible to see that it appeared to be stuck reinstalling grub. The only way out was to shut down the guest. After restarting, the initial Ubuntu Logo showed but the VM would not boot. I tried this three times, with the same result each time. I also did the upgrade on a separate machine not running virtualbox and it completed without any problems. I also installed Ubuntu 11.10 from scratch on a new VM without any problems.
