#4665 obsolete old windows games complain about "failed to initialize window" and "try changing the screen resolution" Stéphane Charette
Description

My wife has a combination of both new and old games all suffering from the same problem. These includes many from the "Nancy Drew" games, and a new one bought today called "Dream Chronicles" by PlayFirst. The requirements for this latest game for example are: Windows ME/2000/XP/Vista, Pentium III, 128MB of ram, DirectX v7.0.

VirtualBox is version 3.0.2, 32-bit, Ubuntu 9.04-32 host and Windows Vista-32 will latest fixes installed as the guest. Guest additions for VBox3.0.2 have been installed.

When the game starts up, a black window covers the screen after which the following error message is displayed:

Failed to initialize window. Pleae try running the game again. If that doesn't help, try changing the screen resolution and color depth. If that fails, then your video card does not support this game.

This error message is no doubt from the game, not from VB, but I was hoping there might be a solution. I did try to enable the 3-D acceleration setting in the "Display" section for the guest, but that made no difference. I do see some lines in the VB log file about screen resolutions:

00:21:30.754 Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0, pvVRAM=ae908000 w=800 h=600 bpp=32 cbLine=0xC80 00:21:30.760 VBVA: Disabled. 00:21:30.782 VBVA: Enabled. 00:21:30.998 Display::handleDisplayResize(): uScreenId = 0, pvVRAM=ae908000 w=1280 h=1024 bpp=32 cbLine=0x1400 00:21:30.998 VBVA: Disabled. 00:21:31.056 VBVA: Enabled.

I've tried 16, 24, and 32-bit depth for 800x600, 1024x768, and in non-fullscreen modes.

#4713 fixed mouse moves very eratically in VB 3.0.4 -> fixed in SVN/3.0.10 Stéphane Charette
Description

VB 3.0.4, host: Ubuntu 9.04-64bit, guest: Ubuntu 9.04-64bit, guest additions 3.0.4 installed. Guest is running maximized, but not fullscreen nor seamless.

I'm having a lot of problems with my mouse starting with VB3.0.4. When the guest first starts up, everything is fine, but after a while (say 30-60 minutes?) the mouse stops working correctly. At that point, the mouse seems to either become "stuck" in one location, or it starts to bounce around where several times per second the mouse will skip from the top of the guest, to the bottom of the guest, with mouse clicks happening randomly, causing windows to appear, minimize, close, etc.

Disabling mouse integration at that point sometimes helps a bit, but even then it still ends up bouncing all over the place.

This has never happened to me before with the dozens of other VirtualBox versions I've used on this computer.

One key thing to note: my host uses a Wacom USB tablet, not an actual mouse. I don't even own an actual mouse, so I cannot test if this is tablet-related. However, I do know this is a regression from previous versions of VirtualBox.

#9666 fixed cannot use USB webcam inside VM Stéphane Charette
Description

I have spent countless hours over the past week trying to find a way to make this work. But it really is starting to look as if USB webcams don't work in VMs. I created a USB filter, and when the guest boots up I can initially see I have a /dev/video0 device. But as soon as I try to use it, I end up with many USB errors logged in the guest, in the VirtualBox machine log, and on the host. And the /dev/video0 device then disappears from the guest.
