| #6290 | obsolete | Allow access to machine settings while machine is running | ||
| Description |
The machines I use are running or state-saved most of the time, so I can spare the time restarting it when I need them. I only restart them when I need to (eg. software updates) and never shut them down. This makes it pretty hard to change its settings; since I cant even look at the possible options without shutting it down first (and sometimes even have to turn it on without a change if the desired options aren't available at all). Since I understand the need of restarting the machine for the changes to come into effect, I propose the possibility to change the settings at any time for them to get applied the next time the machine shuts down or restarts. In the GUI, the changed settings could be marked by some kind of "restart required" symbol and a reset button to the actual current state would also be convenient. This feature could be used for example if someone notices the need of more RAM while compiling a big project, without interrupting the compilation. Or to activate a new feature in VirtualBox. So one can make the changes when their need is noticed, finish the current work and restart anytime later when all processes are finished. |

| #255 | obsolete | Allow audio buffer size to be adjusted | ||
| Description |
I am using VirtualBox 1.3.8 with Ubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10) as host and Windows XP SP2 as guest. When I attempt to play music (or run any application producing continuous sound) in the Windows XP guest, the sound plays continuously as long as I only interact with the Windows guest. Whenever I interact with the Ubuntu host (even simply maximizing/minimizing a browser window), the sound coming from the guest will skip. It seems that the sound only skips when the host takes any CPU time away from the guest, which would make sense. While searching for more information about this problem, I found that VMware allows you to modify the size of the audio buffer for its virtual sound card (see http://www.vmware.com/support/ws3/doc/ws32_vidsound4.html). I believe that having the ability to adjust the audio buffer size in VirtualBox could effectively minimize this problem, since the guest could potentially go much longer without CPU time before the audio buffer would empty. Ticket #167 may also be caused by this problem, although the situation described there is not completely the same. |

| #10787 | obsolete | Allow cloning of an instance while it's paused | ||
| Description |
I'm setting up a replacement server using virtualbox instead of simply installing everything on the host (for obvious reasons). I would also like to make weekly (or even daily) backups of the complete instance, so recovery is very fast when the physical machine dies. I store such backups on separate machines. I've been searching for various backup strategies on the forum (and by using google), and I've learned that doing complete instance backups while the instance is running is currently unsupported. What I would like to be able to do (for now) is doing a clone of a live instance that I paused. This should be a lot easier to program than doing a clone of an actual running instance. I guess you've heard such feature requests a lot before, and might already started on adding similar functionality. (The way I intend to create semi-live backups is to pause the instance, do a regular file copy of all instance files and resume the instance. Not perfect, but works for my needs.) |
