#2604 fixed 64-Bit Solaris 10 guests don't work -> fixed in SVN sej7278
Description

See also http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=45615

Basically if you run a 64-Bit Linux/Vista host and enable VT-X, Solaris 10u5 or 10u6 will not boot. on a 32-Bit CPU or with VT-X disabled, Solaris goes into 32-Bit mode and works fine.

Both will install ok, but 10u6 never gets past first boot. 10u5 dies if you apply a kernel patch and if you install Guest Additions it breaks X completely.

SATA support doesn't seem to work with any host/guest combination, and Guest Additions are a bit flaky at best - with resizing the VirtualBox window crashing Gnome.

#9051 duplicate 64-bit Centos 5.5 VM crashes 32-bit Win 7 host on HP Probook 6450b laptop David Aldrich
Description

Hi

Host:

  • HP ProBook 6450b laptop (Intel Core i5)
  • Windows 7 32-bit host o/s
  • VirtualBox 4.0.8
  • VT-x/AMD-V enabled in BIOS

I have built 32-bit and 64-bit Centos 5.5 VMs. The 32-bit VM runs solidly on the above host, but the 64-bit VM crashes the laptop at random times (sometimes while the VM is starting, sometimes after hours of the VM running).

I have disabled automatic restart on system failure in System Properties of Windows, but the crash still restarts the laptop (I have McAfee SafeBoot installed, which is a disk encryption system, after the crash I arrive at the Safeboot login).

On another 6450b laptop, which was very recently delivered and so has up-to-date BIOS and drivers, we installed Win 7 64-bit o/s and found that the 64-bit Centos VM ran solidly with no crashes. We then rebuilt the same laptop with Win 7 32-bit o/s and saw that the 64-bit Centos VM crashed the host as on my laptop.

I have discussed this problem on the forums with no solution:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39752&sid=0ea61614b7b546fea7d50f19a9d7e3db

I will attach the log of a crashed VM to this ticket.

I don't know how to obtain a minidump but will get one if you tell me how.

Best regards

David

#14599 invalid 64-bit OS machine choices disabled with Intel Virtualization BIOS disabled Mindanser
Description

No Windows 64-bit Guest Version choices on a 64-bit System

I discovered the answer based on information from the following site: http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2014/11/virtualbox-showing-32-bit-guest-versions-64-bit-host-os/

On a Lenovo ThinkCentre with Intel processor, running Windows 7, and disk encryption software, follow this process:

Boot normally, then run the Repair option from the Virtual Box Installer (not sure it's necessary, but I did it following one of the suggestions on the site), then do a Restart as suggested by the program).

Press F1 at boot time to get to the BIOS, ENABLE the Intel Virtualization feature in the Advanced menu, press F10 to save the BIOS setting change, and then continue with the normal Boot sequence.

Bring up Virtual Box again and the Windows 64-bit OS choices appear when you choose to create a new VM.
